Instant Payments in Switzerland: Fast, Secure, Available 24/7

Since 20 August 2024 Switzerland has taken a major step forward in payments by adopting the instant payment system. This innovation, made possible by SIX’s new SIC5 platform, enables funds to be transferred in a matter of seconds, 24/7.

What does this revolution involve?

Unlike traditional transfers, which can take several hours or even days, instant payment guarantees almost immediate execution of transactions. This speed is particularly advantageous for transactions requiring immediate liquidity, such as online purchases, last-minute bookings or business-to-business settlements.

In terms of security, this payment system is secure and complies with current standards. Security is therefore identical to that of an ordinary payment.

Gradual but rapid adoption

While receiving instant payments is now the norm for most Swiss banks, sending such payments is still a gradual process. Major banks such as UBS, Raiffeisen and Lenzburg Mortgage Bank already offer this service. PostFinance, meanwhile, is due to introduce the service shortly.

As far as charges are concerned, they can vary. For example, UBS charges CHF 5 per transaction, while Raiffeisen recommends CHF 2 for private customers. BCBE and Lenzburg Mortgage Bank stand out by offering free transfers to their customers. While the rates of some banks are still pending, one thing is certain: the payments you receive are always credited free of charge.

Alignment with international standards

By adopting instant payment, Switzerland is aligning itself with European and international standards. This development enhances the attractiveness of the Swiss financial center and improves the banks’ customer experience.

Instant payment therefore represents a major step forward for the Swiss financial system. By offering greater speed, flexibility and security, this innovation is set to become the norm in the years to come. By offering this new service, Swiss banks are meeting their customers’ expectations and adapting to market trends.
